His Legacy

MAJOR GENERAL ROWLAND NKWAZEMA OGBONNA (rtd) FSS MSS psc(+) mni CFR

Forever etched in history as “The Boy Who Named NMS,” General Ogbonna’s vision in 1959 redefined the future of the Nigerian Military School, Zaria. His suggestion to rename the Boys Company to the Nigerian Military School (NMS) captured the essence of its mission—an enduring legacy that still stands strong today. His clarity of thought and foresight ensured that the institution’s name reflected its military purpose, and his proposal was officially adopted that same year.

From the halls of the United Stated Army Cadets School, Fort Knox, Kentucky to the frontlines of history at the Command and Staff College in Quetta, Pakistan, General Ogbonna’s stellar military career spanned over three decades, during which he earned a reputation as one of the foremost post-civil war 2-Star Generals of Igbo descent.

A gallant infantry officer and leader in every sense, he held key roles including Director General of Nigerian Army Recruitment and Reserve, Brigade Commander of the 13 Brigade in Calabar, Acting General Officer Commanding of the 82 Division in Enugu, and Director of Studies at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos.

During the Bakassi Peninsula crisis, his leadership as Commander of the 13 Amphibious Brigade played a pivotal role in securing peace between Nigeria and Cameroon, preserving Nigeria’s territorial integrity with diplomacy and strength. Globally, he served as a military diplomat, representing Nigeria in key international missions across the Philippines, Venezuela, Brazil, South Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and China, elevating Nigeria’s standing on the global stage.

In 1983, during a turbulent period in Ghana under Jerry Rawlings, General Ogbonna played a key role in restructuring the Ghanaian military, using his expertise to foster stability in the region.

But it was not just his military acumen that set him apart—it was his unwavering commitment to the future of the armed forces. Even in retirement, he continued to shape the next generation of military leaders through seminars and mentorship, ensuring that the pillars of tactical excellence, strategy, and resilience remained strong in an ever-changing West Africa.

Back home in the Avu Ancient Kingdom, General Ogbonna was a beloved and respected figure. As the Ochi Agha 1 of Avu, Traditional Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Avu Traditional Council, he worked tirelessly to resolve communal disputes and create an environment where peace and prosperity could thrive. His leadership extended beyond the battlefield, nurturing the growth of his community and ensuring its future was as secure as the land he had once defended.

A soldier. A diplomat. A visionary. A leader of his people. General Ogbonna’s life was one of quiet strength and unwavering service. His legacy will continue to echo through the generations—through the soldiers he mentored, the communities he uplifted, and the country he served with distinction. His story is one of courage, integrity, and vision, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who encountered him.

He leaves behind a nation forever indebted to his selfless contributions, a beloved family, and a community that will remember him as a pillar of strength and leadership.

General Ogbonna leaves behind his devoted wife, eight children, eight grandchildren, and a legacy that will inspire for years to come.

"With profound love and remembrance, we come together to celebrate a life that brought light and warmth to all who knew him. His legacy of love and kindness will forever remain in our hearts, guiding us through each moment with cherished memories."

General Ogbonna, May your soul Rest In Peace, may God grant your family the grace to bear the loss.

~ Longinus Mbakwem

The Man I called "My General" was one of the most humble, cheerful, unassuming and welcoming individuals I have ever met in my life. From the first day he set eyes on me he called me" His tallest ADC" and would always flash me that million dollar smile immediately afterwards then request that I sat down next to him. His eyes would light up when speaking and he enjoyed sharing his knowledge of history with me. He was like a living encyclopaedia of military history and I always marvelled at the depths of information he could conjure and recite. He had that gift of placing you at ease and you would never even suspect that you were in the presence of a Major General and a celebrated pioneer of the Nigerian Military institution. I saw him till his last day and still cannot believe that I would not hear him citing his favourite nickname for me. A Man of Roland Ogbonna's stature will never be forgotten by anyone who had the privilege and honour to be graced with his presence and the Ogbonna family can rest assured that only good things will be said about him because of the multitude of hearts that he touched and assisted in his journey through life. The only reason we feel we have lost him is because the Man above has gained an awesome companion to be with him in the heavens. May the Soul of this great Man rest in peace and we ask for the blessing and courage to take his family through this very traumatic period.

~ Derrick Izilein

It was a year ago I had the privilege of taking history class from the great patriot, the General. It was an interesting session as we covered topics ranging from “Why did you join the military?, Do you have any regrets? Who were your classmates? What are your achievements?” From your responses, it was palpable that you loved your country and you enjoyed the selfless service you rendered. I’ll forever cherish that short but precious moment of gleaning from your wealth of wisdom and experience. Being a teacher, you left me with an assignment to find out about the “boy” who named Nigerian Military School - NMS Zaria. In curiosity, I did my assignment and returned with so much respect having found out it was you, the great General. Little did I know that I’d return to the same city to bid you farewell today. We know God knows best. Therefore, in life, in death, we love and respect you, daddy, grand daddy and father in-law. Rest in perfect peace, an Officer and a Gentleman 🫡🫡🫡.

Eulogy for Major General Roland N. Ogbonna In honor of the life and legacy of a remarkable man, Major General Ogbonna, a leader, a mentor, and a pillar of strength in our family and beyond. His departure leaves a void that words cannot fully capture, but we find solace in the indelible mark he has left on our lives. A man of discipline, honor, and selfless service, Major General Ogbonna dedicated his life to the Nigerian Army and his country, serving with unwavering commitment. His leadership was not just about authority—it was about integrity, wisdom, and a deep sense of responsibility. He led by example, teaching us that true strength lies in character, resilience, and the ability to lift others up. He was a father figure, a mentor who instilled in us a deep-rooted sense of discipline, purpose, and the drive to excel. He saw potential in people and nurtured it, ensuring that we, the Ogbonna family, stood on solid ground—equipped with knowledge, supported by his generosity, and guided by his wisdom. His well of resources was not just financial but also intellectual and emotional, ensuring that no one in the family lacked direction or support. His generosity extended far beyond our family. He touched the lives of many—friends, colleagues, and subordinates—always leading with a heart that sought the good of others. His legacy is not just in the medals he earned, but in the people he shaped, the lives he impacted, and the love he shared. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life well-lived—a life of honor, sacrifice, and immense contribution. Though he is no longer with us, his principles, his strength, and his values will continue to guide us. Rest well, dear Brother. Your legacy lives on in each of us.

~ Pastor Akuwueze Ogbonna

Tribute to General Ogbonna It is with a heavy heart and deep respect that I write to pay tribute to a great man — a soldier, a leader, a patriot, and a General. The news of your passing brought profound sadness to my heart. It’s still hard to believe that you’re truly gone. I will especially miss the funny nickname you gave me — “Long Lady.” It always brought a smile to my face and reflected your warm, playful spirit. You were full of life and always ready for a meaningful conversation, whether with me or anyone who crossed your path. I remember so clearly how you opened the doors of your home to me during my master’s degree. From that moment on, your home remained a place of welcome and comfort. Each time I visited Owerri, you had encouraging words to share. Your wisdom, kindness, and generosity left a lasting impression on me. I remain grateful for every moment spent with you. It is hard to accept that you are no longer with us, but I take solace in knowing you are in a better place. Still, you will be deeply and dearly missed. Rest well, General. Until we meet again — where parting shall be no more. With love and respect, Mandy.

~ Mandy Onukogu

In times like this words indeed fail when they are needed the most. Rest on sir. You left a legacy worthy of emulation.

Tribute to a Great General In the tranquil chaos of your life, you embodied a rare blend of strength and gentleness. You were my steadfast mentor, my guiding light, and in your presence, I learned the art of sincere ethics. You often called me Stella Maris, the star of the sea, reminding me that even in turbulent waters, one can shine brightly. Your teachings were a symphony of wisdom, where prudent decisions harmonized with random acts of kindness. You showed me that true strength lies in compassion, making every moment a gentle battle for goodness. You taught me to count my blessings, turning ordinary days into extraordinary gifts. Your lessons on sincerity were not just words; they were an enduring legacy of integrity that will forever guide my path. As I honor your memory, I carry your spirit with me a gentle warrior whose influence continues to shine like a beacon. Thank you for being my hero, my teacher, and my eternal star. Your light will never fade. Adieu Palee

*A TRIBUTE TO AN ICON* Fading away like the stars in the morning Losing their light in the glorious sun Thus would we pass from the earth and its toiling Only remembered by what we have done. A wonderful man has left this world. A man of good heart, who welcomed me to the family of Ogbonna and made himself to be my father in-law who I never met. You took me in like your daughter in-law and secured me and my children in different ways. You were indeed a General in all spheres of life. It is only but the will of your creator to call you back home, and who are we to question Him. Rest on big daddy Adieu The General From Angela Ogbonna and Sons.

Rest peacefully, My Dear Uncle Nkwazema. SALUTE!

~ Chibuzor Ogbonna

OLD CALABAR While a lot of my colleagues fondly remember you as OLD CALABAR due to your love for that Military Musical Masterpiece, I remember you as an Ex Boy General Per Excellence, a charismatic Leader and Mentor, one I was privileged to sit and discuss military matters with and get an insight into your take on the Nigerian Military School history and the Army at large. You were an Astute General and a Simple Man By Nature. May God graciously reward you for all you did for your community, it's environment and the Nation at large. Adieu Sir till we meet again!!!

~ Raymond Irechukwu

You were a great personality with a great sense of humor. Moments with you are irreplaceable as they are filled with impartation of wisdom and knowlege. Most remarkable of your character which I find admirable was your exceptional love for your children and commitment to see them succeed. In as much as I know all mortals would die, I wasn't expecting yours so soon. But God knows the best and has the final say. As you journey to the great beyond, may God Almighty accept your soul and grant your family and the rest of us the fortitude to beat your demise. Adieu, The General.

~ Barr Ejike Esinkonye (Enyioha)

Nda Nkwazema, you will always remain a great uncle. Your sense of humor and straightforwardness stood you out as an excellent gentleman and officer. You will be missed by the Achodo's family especially my mum Eruche Ekewuba. Your regular phone calls would be missed. RIP

~ Charles Achodo

Nda Nkwazema. A strong Man with a soft heart. A man so natural to the extent of never hiding his tears when so moved by his emotions. He cries with those who cry. A man who will always be with his people especially in their difficult times. A man whose doors are open to anyone that wishes to visit. A man who takes time to visit families. Some of us may remember in the 80s when he came home with a horse. And he entered every singular compound in most parts of Avu to greet households. " Horse ekele o!" And the horse will bow its head and raise a few times. For many of us it was our first time to see a live horse. Those close to him will admit that he's a good historian. Now. Who will wear the big shoe of Nda Nkwazema ? We miss him dearly. May we all be consoled by the resurrection hope 🌹🙏🏻 JOHN 5:28.

~ NNOROM EKEWUBA, EHIETTA,AVU

We will all gather to celebrate our own, Maj. Gen. R. N. Ogbonna,Rtd. Nda Nkwazema as we fondly call him, in death for a lifetime well spent. He has come, faught and conquered. Not all will see or appreciate his good deeds , but only God in heaven. For the little/ much I knew Nda Nkwazema, you cannot judge a book from the cover unless you open it and read. It's only those that went closer him can atast to his lifestyle and person. We will only know the usefulness of useless baskets on the day of sacrifice. We have lost a hero, real gem and personality in Avu, Owerri West and the entire IMO. Ndaa Nkwazema , we love you but God loves you more and to his glory, you have lived a fulfilled life. May your gentle soul rest in the bossom of the Lord till eternity. Rest on Ndaa and good night.

~ Ugwumba Cyril Uzoma Amadi

~ Chisa Ogbonna

The news of General's death struck like a thunderbolt. I met General for the first time in 2013 at Avu. He was returning from his farm and we struck up a conversation. He was lively, warm and receptive as if he had known me all his life. General was a man 'without can't': nothing fazed him. His positivity was contagious. He felt ease with everyone - young or old and never considered people on the basis of class or net worth. It is, therefore, with a heavy heart that I write of General in the past tense. He was larger than life; a devout Christian, great father and community leader. General will be sorely missed. I pray that God will grant his courageous soul peaceful repose.

~ Peter Claver Okoro, Esq; PhD

Really your dead came to me as a surprise. But the truth is that none can question God. You were always cheerful and always smiling , you are such a unique person. I doubt if your entire community or generations will ever get someone like you in this life. Trust me the vacuum you created can never be replaced by anyone. Go well my sweet daddy.
